I flew three different aircraft, in two different career fields, during my 24-year Air Force career. The first was the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy, from 1980 to 1987 as an Aircraft Loadmaster. I logged 2,000 hours on this aircraft.
The second aircraft was the Lockheed C-141B Starlifter, from 1987 to 1994 as a Flight Engineer. I amassed 2,500 hours on this aircraft. The last Starlifter was retired from active duty service in 2004.
I finished my career flying the mighty McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender aerial tanker, also as a Flight Engineer. Three engines generate 157,500 lbs of thrust, with a maximum takeoff weight of 590,000 lbs and a cruising speed of .825 Mach. I logged over 3,600 hours on this aircraft between 1995 and my retirement in 2004.
The KC-10 does two things extremely well ... it gives gas, and takes gas. If we aren't refueling other planes, we are taking on more fuel ourselves ... we can carry 340,000 lbs of fuel (50,000 gallons). Here we are refueling a B-52H bomber.
